We can go boating on the Thames

Daisy G has had her boat safety scheme inspection and passed successfully, so we can go boating on the  Thames now. The BSS is primarily about fire safety for inland waters, so not too much of a problem as I don't have a fixed gas system. I don't know when we will go on the river, but likely in August or September. I will need a licence for when we are on it, but that can be purchased from a lock keeper. I will leave all sailing rig at home, I couldn't face raising and lowering masts for all the bridges. We are close to Lechlade, where there is a good launching slipway and plenty of trailer parking. It will be quite a different experience.

  1. It will be good to hear how you get on. I presume you are rowing and taking Montmerency with you as look out

  2. I think we will be motoring and sadly no boat dog at the moment. But who knows?

  3. What are the regulations governing the BSS? Does it only come into play on boats oer a certain length? I'm going down the Thames in early June with a group of like minded boat builders and have no intentions of getting a BSS before hand. I have no fixed gas installation or fixed fuel tanks onboard my Paradox.

  4. They basically relate to anything which could cause a fire. So electrical systems, especially having a battery isolator and good wiring, fuel pipe systems being in good condition, and gas bottles able to drain overboard. If you don't have fixed gas systems, I doubt you need to worry. You need to buy a licence at the first lock you go through. I think that you just have to sign that your boat meets the BSS requirements, which I think should be fine for you. But I have never been on the Thames, so others might have fist hand experience. Ask on the UKHBBR forum and you shoudl get a definitve answer.
