Solent RAID in 2011?

I have heard through the grapevine that there may be another RAID this year, back in the Solent. Originally the organisers of last year's English RAID said "Never again!" but it looks like they have been talked around to it. It is all provisional at the moment, but I shall be there if I can. The outline is shown nelow. Lymington-Bembridge-Itchenor (Chichester Harbour)-Hamble River-Lymington and a final optional day to Keyhaven.

The long term plan is another Engliush RAID on the East Coast in 2012, which would be great fun.

  2. Hi Julian,

Excuse my ignorance but what is a raid? Is it open to any type of boat or only Swallow boats. ANy links to organisers would be good. Never know my old tub might be ready to join in...

  3. Hi Andy
Raids are popping up all over the place, having started in France originally. The idea is for a semi or non competitive get together of basically sail and oar powered boats in an area where they can sail up rivers, estuaries, lakes and protected areas for a few days. One is held in Scotland every other year, going up the Great Glen, others are held in Holland, Venice believe it or not, and in the Finnish Baltic. The Swallow Bayraider was developed from the Swallow Searaider, which was specifically designed to be a competitive Raid boat. Some Raids are exclusively sail and oar (or muscle power to be accurate. Some are pedal powered and that is acceptable). Others, like the English Raid, like to have a few boats with outboards which can help tow some of the smaller boats if it proves necessary. That is why I got in, as I can't realistically row Daisy G. The Website for last year's Raid is at:

    They are good fun.
